1850s - 184th anniversary of the Charitable Society of Natives and Citizens
Saturday, Sept ember 24, 1853
Southampton – Last Saturday evening, as the son of Mrs Gore, of Hamble Cliff, Southampton, was driving home in his dogcart, accompanied by a groom, the horse, in passing the railway, took fright at the noise of an engine, and started off at a furious pace down the steep bank of the Itchen. The tide being high, the animal was in a moment out of its depth, and speedily drowned. Mr Gore and his servant were picked up, when nearly exhausted, by the boat’s crew of the Arrow yacht. Much interest was excited among the numerous spectators on the shore, by the endeavours of a large dog, which swam out after the carriage to save its master, and extricate the horse, even after the latter had ceased to exist.
Winchester – The 184th anniversary of the Charitable Society of Natives and Citizens was celebrated in this city last Thursday, when the stewards and trustees, accompanied by the apprentices, went in procession to the Cathedral, where an excellent sermon was preached on the occasion by the Rev. C. Walters, of Week, from Galatians vi. 9, 10, v. “Be not weary of well doing; for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.” After the sermon, a collection was made at the doors. The usual examination of the apprentices then took place, at St. John’s House. Each of them produced a satisfactory certificate of character from his master, and four of them, who attended for the last time, returned thanks for the benefit they had received from the institution.
Wherwell – The Wherwell Fair was fully supplied with both Sheep and Lambs. Business opened by sellers asking higher prices, which in the early part of the day were more willingly paid than towards the close. On the whole, it may be termed a slow fair, at prices equal to Wilton. Mr. Tilbury, of Chilbolton, had two very superior pens- one of Ewes, the other of Lambs.
