Awards Night

Winners take centre stage

THIS year’s star-studded Daily Echo Curtain Call Awards had something of a Gallic charm to them with special guest ’Allo ’Allo actress Vicki Michelle hosting the evening.

But it was the Collingwood Random Salad Company who were the real stars of the night as they took the coveted Production of the Year award with their imaginative and hilarious play Denim.

Affectionately known as the Oscars of the South, the prestigious awards ceremony brought together some of Hampshire’s finest thespians, directors, playwrites and theatrical groups in a celebration of local theatre.

And with such an extraordinary wealth of talent in the county judges had their work cut out whittling down the nominees to find this year’s winners.

Held in the majestic surroundings of Winchester, at the city’s Guildhall, the Curtain Call Awards were once again fuelled by an air of suspense, drama and excitement.

With more than 30 awards to be won there was plenty to play for. Notable successes included, a first gong for debutante director Cheryl Titcombe, who picked up the Best Newcomer Award for Where the Lilies Blow and five awards for the Eastleigh Operatic and Musical Society, including the trophy for Best Director of a Musical and Best Director of a Youth Production.

Daily Echo editor Ian Murray was the first to applaud the hard work of Hampshire’s dedicated amateur dramatic groups.

He said: “The Curtain Call Awards are always a very special occasion.

“Everyone in all of our local amateur dramatic groups work so hard throughout the year and it’s marvellous to be able to reward so much excellence.”

But after such a successful year on the stage Hampshire’s amateur dramatic groups have the challenge of matching it all again this year!
